Local historian in war memorial plea

Jack Alexander, author of McCrae's Battalion and outstanding local historian, addressed the Council yesterday. The Haymarket war memorial (and clock) is due to be removed temporarily to enable the tram works to proceed. There have been suggestions that the memorial was to be moved to Athol Crescent on a permanent basis but Jack visited the Council meeting to educate councillors on the significance of the memorial and to persuade them to ensure it is returned to a prominent position very close to where it is now. He succeeded.

George McCrae is a largely forgotten hero who is worthy of a memorial of his own. He was a Southsider who had a lasting influence well beyond Edinburgh.

An excellent speaker, Jack is also both well informed and passionate. He will be a superb speaker for schools, conferences and other events.
