Fire swathes city centre in smoke

Not quite within the Southside & Newington ward but from about 8:00pm a large fire in a building on the south side of Victoria Street, between George IV Bridge and the Grassmarket burned out of control.  Flames, driven by gale force winds, swept across the roof as firefighters fought, apparently in vain, to bring them under control.
Update 11pm:  The BBC has more details now.
