£20 admin fee for Blue Badge

The Blue Badge Scheme is a program for people with disabilities who find it difficult to get around without using a car.

From May 1st the Council will introduce a fee of £20 for the issue of the badge which lasts three years. Badge holders make savings through the exemption from on-street parking charges, and those who live in a Controlled Parking Zone can continue to be issued with a free Residents’ Parking Permit. Entitlement can be found here.

Cameron you seem to trying to justify charging disabled pepole, while many of the councillors claim mileage expenses on thier way to council work which witout any doubt they actaully make a profit on,0ct 2008 camerom rose millage=92 claimed £50 this more than covered you travel expenses inc. fuel it is a scandal, pepole who are not able bodied are being hit with chages while our councillors make a proflt, really where are your morals its a disgrace cllr rose you should be ashamed

I know this is no place for a debate but I don't think that's reasonable.

It seems to me that the ridiculously disproportionate level of scrutiny attached to what amounts to tiny amounts of working expenses (on top of relatively tiny salaries) only serves to encourage councillors to sit at home and do nothing. And talk of a 'shake up' suggests there are/have been councillors with better expenses records? Labour?

The constant (and sadly justifiable) fear that they will be accused of somehow 'abandoning the vulnerable' if they change anything paralyses the administration. Until Edinburgh (and Scotland) realises that it cannot, and indeed should not, seek to hand out cash to everyone who asks for it, it will continue to struggle on spending money it does not have. And shame on the press for playing Labour's sad populist game.

dcwarden, the point im trying to make is that while claiming mileage they also make a little profit on top, why should they? and at the same time they have the nerve to charge disabled pepole a new admin charge for the blue badge, most of these pepole will earn no where near what a councillor earns thats if they even earn atol, why dont the councillors give the little bit profit they earn on mileage expenses back, oh btw the way mr cameron himself raised the issue then highlighted it on this blog, the £20 profit cllr. Rose earned on his 92miler could have and in my view should ave been paid back it would have covered the cost of the new admin charge for a disabled persons badge, cllr, rose is an ex polce inspector im guessing with a handsome pension why should he keep the £20 profit then harp on about justifing the new admin charge, why is this no place for debate?

dcwarden, you say tiny salaries, whats the average wage of a disabled person with a blue badge? i know a few who have them one with cancer and dementia and no working income this £20 charge will hit her very hard thats if and in all honesty if she is even aware she has to pay such is the extent of her illness, l heard cllr rose on a radio interview talking about christinity and humanity aye you have to laugh

Paul,

Thank you for your regular interest in my blog.

Your first comment: This blog generally reports local news. Occasionally it strays into opinion. The post to which you have attached your comment is entirely a report of local news which will be of interest to some residents in the ward. The post doesn't express my view and was taken from a Council release. Paul, I'm just trying to be helpful :-).

2nd comment: I pushed for expenses to be more detailed so that people like you could have a look for yourself. So let's look at your comment about the mileage claim for taking my car and two other people to Glasgow. IIRC it was a late event which ended late in the evening and that was the cheapest way to do it. You may like to know there is a set mileage rate - which takes into account the cost of owning and running a car. It is a national rate. These rates are set so there can be clarity and certainty and to reflect the actual costs. The rules, which are pretty clear, apply for other forms of transport as well. For my part, I often use my car or bike for travel for which I could claim. Usually I don't - because it is too bureacratic, because I can afford not to and because time is more important to me. To use the words 'scandal', 'disgrace' and 'should be ashamed' about me in one half of a sentence in this context is just a tiny bit unfair!

Here's a challenge to you if you are a constituent. As you've been lurking on this site for a while, I invite you to meet for a chat and a coffee in one of the excellent cafes in Southside and Newington so you can find out a bit more of what I am really like. You up for it?

£20 for three years = 13p per week, which seems fair enough. The administration involved and the upkeep of records must cost a lot more than £20. And maybe some money should be spent to make sure that there are no abuses of the system......

The whole point im trying to make here is the council are trying to rasie revenue by charging disabled citizens £20 and at the same time councillors are using the system to basicly run there cars, not all councillors and cllr rose has by no means tried to or done this,i used his milleage to show that on every car journey councillors make by there own car they are making a profit, if you can change the blue badge system to start charging for its issue you can change the milleage expenses system to one where no profit is made, Mr rose, do you agree with charging the £20 admin fee for the blue badge scheme bearing in mind this will impact on the most vunerable in our community? Im fully aware how the expenses system operates and im only highlighting that a profit is made from it i think it is wrong for the council to explore other methods of rasing revenue without fisrtly addressing this issue, on a 100 mile journey councillors can claim £50 in expenses with fuel and running cost accunted for this leaves £20 profit for the councillor, the cost of admin for a blue badge is £20,

Colin c, i have watched a disabled person and have helped her budget she has no money left at the end off the week so how is she going to pay for this cost?

Cameron, would you prepared to buy lunch to i could bring the family and maybe a few old aunts they are always up for a freebie, birex is quite nice, Only joking thanks for your offer ill decline at the moment im a tad busy,

Cameron on a serious note do you support the£20 admin fee and noe that im at it have you tried to save the number shop from closure i feel these would be good causes that could win you more support from the working man and woman something that is lacking for the party at the moment
