£500 fine for drunk local student

On 1st January this year 19 year old local resident  Jamie Anderson was drunk.  He threw a traffic cone over George IV Bridge into Merchant Street below.  Thankfully it missed those in the street below.  Nearby police officers arrested him and Anderson appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier this week where he pled guilty.

Fine: £500.

From this BBC report, Sheriff McColl clearly gave consideration custody as she called for background reports before sentence.  A few others need to appreciate that drunkenness is aggravation to an offence, not mitigation.
