The Commie wows!

Scott Hastings
The ceremony to open the refurbished Commonwealth Pool in Dalkeith Road was an impressive affair this afternoon.

Brilliantly compered by Scott Hastings, it also featured David Wilkie who won a bronze medal at the 1970 Commonwealth Games before going on to a glittering swimming career which included gold at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

There was a superb display by members of the Edinburgh Diving Club as well as introductions to Scottish swimmers who have qualified for the London Olympics.

Although the technology behind the scenes is much changed, it is remarkable how similar the venue looks, inside and out, to its previous incarnation.

It opens to the public tomorrow, with weekday opening hours 5:30am to 10pm.  See here for details.

I understand in the last full year of opening there were 600,000 visits.  The aim for the first full year is 750,000. With the soft play area, fitness suite, dance area, trampolines, diving pool and cafe (open from 7:30am) there are plenty of reasons to visit.
