A few achievements of the Union to date

As I noted the welcome 11 new street names for the roads within the King's Buildings - see here for the details - I began to wonder about the galaxy of scientists whose names are being passed on to the next generation.

Their contributions and achievements for Edinburgh, Scotland and the world are a reflection of what has, in total, been an exceptionally successful union over the last three centuries.
Here are the Edinburgh related scientists being celebrated in the street names.
  • Sir James Dewar (1848-1923)
  • Thomas Bayes (1701-1761)
  • Marion Ross (1903-1994)
  • James Hutton (1726-1797)
  • Sir David Brewster (1781-1868)
  • Charlotte Auerbach (1899-1994)
  • Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901)
  • Nicholas Kemmer (1911-1999)
  • Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746)
  • Alexander Crum Brown (1838-1922)
  • Max Born (1882-1970)
  • Robert Stevenson (1772-1850)
