'Legal highs' - good progress locally

Today brings good news on the blight of legal highs which is evident in the Southside area particularly where there are two 'head shops' associated with the distribution of these drugs.

Trading Standards officers, working with the police, have been granted Forfeiture Orders from the Sheriff Court declaring 'legal highs' (more correctly titled NPS substances) as unsafe.

This has led to a joint operation where a substantial quantity of NPS substances have been seized.

This is most welcome progress and chimes with the work being done at the UK Government level. First of all, following a submission by local officers, a temporary ban on a group of NPS compounds was brought in earlier this year.   In addition there is ongoing progress in bringing in nationwide rules to ban a range of substances permanently.

All this is good news for the Southside.
