French award for Tom Gilzean

Tam Gilzean has been awarded the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Legion d'honneur in recognition of his WW2 service in France with the Royal Engineers.

95 year old Tam can be seen most days in the Royal Mile or Princes Street raising money for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children - or other charities.
He lives in the Prestonfield area of the ward.

The French ambassador said:
“I offer you my warmest congratulations on this high honour in recognition of your acknowledged military engagement and your steadfast involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War.
“As we contemplate this Europe of peace, we must never forget the heroes like you.”
